A one night camping trip in the mountains between the villages of Anatoli and Kalamafka.Camp in the middle of nowhere with no artificial lights to ruin the fantastic view of the night skies.

This is a 'wild' camping trip and there are no toilet facilities.

We leave the village of Anatoli in the late afternoon with 2 of our fit long eared friends. They have pack saddles and will carry our tents, personal items and refreshments for the journey.

Our walk takes us along ancient paths and tracks through the foothills of the Dikte mountains. The views of seas, both Libyan and Aegean, and islands on the north and south coast are incredible. In one direction we see the vast range of the Dikte range and on the other side we can view the Thripti mountains.

We walk up through olive groves on an original mule path and soon enter a plateau which is the grape growing area. The wine made from here is delicious. Depending on the time of year there will often be titbits to eat on the way. In late summer the miniature mountain pears are juicy and sweet and at other times you will find grapes almonds and walnuts to mention just a few. Of course the donkeys also love to grab at tasty morsals along the way.

After about 3 1/2 hours we arrive at the site of an ancient monastery. There are three churches in this area. Agia Panagia, Agios Giorgos and Timios Stavros (church of the holy cross) perched on top of a high rock.

We arrive at the chruch of Panagia (Mary) and unload the donkeys. Before we can settle down to make a nice cup of tea we must make sure the donkeys have water and are tethered securely in the field so that they cannot venture into the nearby grape vines. (not popular with the local farmers)

When the donks are happily munching and we have had whatever refreshment is favourite we will choose a nice flat spot to pitch the tents.

We have good quality mountain tents which are easy to pitch and very secure in the case of windy weather.

And this is where we cheat......Alistair will drive to our camp site bringing cool boxes full of goodies and any other stuff that we could not fit on the donkeys.

Supper is cooked on an open fire with a gas cooker back up and we exchange stories and tales well into the night before checking that the donkeys are happy and falling into our sleeping bags.
